A CNN journalist was forced to take quick action during a live news report from a beach in California when a woman wandered into the shot, pulled down her undies and went for a number two.

National correspondent Sarah Sidner was in the middle of discussing the coronavirus pandemic with her co-workers in New York City when the incident happened on Monday.

In the footage, which was filmed at Santa Monica beach, in LA, the woman, put down several black garbage bags on the sand before doing the deed.

It is believed the woman is homeless according to some reports.

Sidner, who must have been alerted via her earpiece, quickly blocked out most of the view by shifting her body to the right of the camera.

She then carried on with her live cross, speaking about the state’s recent virus spike with a 41 per cent rise in cases since mid June.

Despite Sidner’s quick move, the woman’s gross act was hard to ignore with many online in shock over the public display.

“Most people would try to find a toilet, and if there wasn’t one, a bush. Who on earth would decide to take a crap in front of a TV camera?” one person asked.

“When nature calls, you have to answer!” said another.

Others saw the humour in it: “Now that is a crap day at work,” one joked.

This latest case of public pooping comes nine months after Sydney’s PR queen Roxy Jacenko posted CCTV footage of a woman defecating outside her office on multiple occasions.

The Sweaty Betty founder posted a series of now-deleted videos to her social media, showing the woman appearing to relieve herself on the street.

“Do you know who this person is?” she asked her 254,000 followers at the time.

One of the clips show an incident, captured by CCTV camera on October 10 just after 6.30am, where a blonde woman stops between two parked cars in the inner-eastern suburb of Paddington.

Dressed in a pink top and black leggings, she drops her pants and crouches down, holding her phone between her teeth as she does so.

Jacenko told news.com.au at the time the woman’s disgusting deposits had occurred multiple times a week, over a four week period.

“The whole street has been wondering what is going on,” Jacenko said.

The act begged the question – why would someone defecate in public?

There are many reasons why people may have the urge to go while running, ranging from gut motility to genetics.

According to a US study of 221 male and female endurance athletes, which was published in the National Library of Medicine Institutes of Health, there was a high prevalence of symptoms directly correlated with a known history of gastrointestinal problems.

Running can also alter something called mucosal permeability, which controls the passing of materials from inside the gastrointestinal tract out to the rest of the body, causing the stool to loosen and impact how often you need to defecate.

This is because of a surge of hormones in your stomach lining from all that bouncing around your body while pounding the pavement.

Royal Melbourne Hospital’s director of gastroenterology Dr Geoff Hebbard recently told news.com.au certain physical activity and colonic motility were related.

“Vigorous exercise can have significant effect on the gut although that would usually be more than a jog around the block,” he explained.

There’s been little study into the psychology behind why people would choose to poo in public, but Australian psychologist Sandy Rea said that in some unusual cases it may be to serve a “sexual fantasy”.

“There is paraphiliac disorder, which is characterised by sexual fantasies and sexual gratification,” Ms Rea told news.com.au.

“Somewhere along the line, there’s been a wrong association between sexual fantasy and defecating in public.

“They get a thrill. They get an arousal, but underlying that gratification is anger and a thought disorder.”

In mid 2018, another Australian jogger was also caught committing the act. Andrew Douglas Macintosh was later charged with creating a public nuisance after neighbours banded together to catch the man they believed had fouled their property up to 30 times in a year.
