Grosvenor Casino Portsmouth Abandoned Property

Just 10 years ago people were still thinking the internet was just a fad. It would soon pass and people will be flooding back to the real world casinos. But we now know that it wasn’t going to happen and what we have left is a massive amount of people gambling online and some amazing looking casinos that are left in ruins…

It’s in 1962, for the reopening of the “Cité du Bokor”, that a casino has been established in the new hotels near the lake. But it seems it couldn’t save this amazing building from falling into disrepair.

Sadly for the town surrounding this casino, when the casino dried up the town dried up and these days the abandoned casino is just the centre point of many other abandoned buildings surrounding it.

A lot of casinos here in the UK have been closed and abandoned for a while now, but yet companies and people still hold onto them with hope for the future (or maybe just land grabbing).

The casino was built by Harrah’s Corporation in 1993. It was the second to open in Vicksburg after riverboat gambling was authorised by state law. At that time, a casino had to be on a floating plant, so all the gambling facilities were on a barge made to look like a paddle steamer (Which of course it wasn’t).

This is a casino that never even got to open! The left image was what it was going to look like and the right one is what it still looks like today, 20 years later.

Once it didn’t seem possible that a casino would ever close down in Las Vegas, but here are with the closing down of a true icon of gambling history.

The Key Largo Casino, located at 377 Flamingo Road in Las Vegas, Nevada, opened in 1974 and closed in 2005. Plans were afoot to convert the building into a condominium tower but a suspicious fire at the site in late March of 2013 has put the kibosh on those plans.

The Jubilation Casino opened in December of 1995 and closed just over 7 months later… failure to legally maintain minimum bankroll requirements to cover payments on table games and slot machines caused the Mississippi Gaming Commission to pull the plug. Not literally, of course, as that would sink the ship.

Casino Constanta was built in 1910 by King Carol I in south-east Romania. It once attracted wealthy Europeans to its gallant game rooms. The casino was designed by French architects who used old ships and marine life to decorate the building’s façade. Inside, crystal chandeliers hung from high arched ceilings with windows in the shape of seashells overlooking the Black Sea.

Name regardless, nothing’s been easy for The Big Easy casino boat. The 238-foot long New Orleans-themed ship was built around a 30,000-square-foot casino boasting 23 gaming tables. One wonders if the wind and waves would affect the motions of the roulette wheel, the dice or the slot machines… actually, the question is moot because The Big Easy has spent much of its life unoccupied, dodging hurricanes, docked at various Florida ports.

This explore used to be a casino with a massive ballroom above and with a cocktail bar and a champaign bar along with other bars and restaurant. The casino itself closed down only last year in 2015 and I think the ballroom above was shut for some time. I am unaware of any plans for the site as of yet. All I could find out about this casino was what I found on the companies website which said the following:

Grosvenor Casino Osborne Road is closed for business as of Sunday 9th August 2015. We sincerely apologise if this causes any inconvenience.

We do have another casino in Portsmouth which we welcome you to come and visit.

We would like to thank you for your custom at Grosvenor Casino Osborne Road and look forward to welcoming you to Grosvenor Casinos Gunwharf Quays and to any other of our 55 Grosvenor Casinos nationwide.”

The Explore

Grosvenor Casino Portsmouth Abandoned Philadelphia

This place I had known about from a few other explorers, however as there have been no reports on this place and there is nothing online we all presumed there was no access. Well we searched for a while and eventually we managed to get inside.

The access to this casino I don’t want to say to much about as this place really is a absolute gem! And to be honest, the fewer people in there the better. It has not been vandalised at all, no graffiti, no signs of fire damage and no smack heads crouched in the corner. I hope it stays this way…..I doubt it will though.

After getting inside the main casino we started at the top and worked our way down. Starting at the ballroom which absolutely blew my mind. One of the most impressive explores I have ever been to without a doubt. The size of the place alone is impressive not to mention the stone cherub statues and the gold delicate metal work around the old bar all untouched and still in its place.

From the ballroom we went down to the champaign and cocktail bars next to the casino where we were delighted to find that the power was on, so on came the lights and so did the air conditioning as it was quite stuffy in there haha.

The casino itself was really nice and good condition, all that has really happened in there since it shut is that they have removed all of the gambling machines. Everything else is still there, we even found some chips dotted around the place and lots of playing cards and a few other bits of casino related items. The safes were brilliant and as you can imagine they were serious safes and massive….all empty unfortunately.

We were in this place for about a couple of hours the first trip, and I have been back a few times since. We wanted to go there as much as possible before posting this location due to its good condition and lack of human activity. I’m almost sad to share this place, but that’s what this is all about I guess 🙂
